We're growing a TechMeetup community in Edinburgh. Demos, pizza, beer, beards (and some blokes with beards too), sandals and angels.

It's been going for six months now and gets about 80 people each time:

Hi, Laurence. I was going through some old links in my RSS reader and saw this post. I hope we'll eventually see this post as marking an end of one era and the beginning of another!

I've been speaking to a number of ycombinator.com startups who are from Cambridge University -- there is a resounding opinion that Cambridge is not a startup place.

No idea why, but you're right. There's no buzz of "something big happening".

I'm the co-founder of a startup (I emailed you and geoff this evening) -- I'd love to get in touch with you and discuss possible investment opportunities.

There is an OpenCoffee morning in Cambridge this thursday -- http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1819920/

I'll be going, and would be great to chat with you -- both about my startup and how we can improve the startup scene.

Hey - who is Simon Ford and what is SHDC? is anyone using meet-up to do a tech meet-up Cambridge? NYC has 7000 members and its a quick visualisation on the size of the community.....should we be using same forum here and joining tech meet-ups worldwide?

Couldn't agree more. Although, of cause, NYC is much larger than Cambridge :-)
I used to go to the old 3Cs meetings with Jack Lang, Hermann & Chris etc etc
I think the closest we have in Cambridge at the moment, with the same intent, is what Simon Ford is doing with SHDC.
Great first post btw
